About Jack Lu

While a judge, Judge Lu heard innumerable civil cases within the wide jurisdiction of the Massachusetts Superior Court, in all stages of litigation including many, many jury trials, mostly concentrated in Essex and Middlesex Counties, Massachusetts. Judge Lu conducted many judicial settlement conferences for colleagues, and in suitable cases and following established procedures for judicial settlement conferences, recused himself and conducted mediations in cases in his session, successfully settling many cases.

Jack uses his perspective as an experienced former trial judge (21 years) to inform and deepen his understanding of the mediation process.

His training in the Harvard Law School Program on Negotiation's Mediating Disputes course (November, 2021) provided him with state of the art preparation in the theory and practice of mediation–some describe the course as the gold standard in mediation training.

Jack was admitted to the bar in 1985 after graduating from Boston University School of Law and Johns Hopkins University.  He was a trial lawyer until his appointment to the Boston Municipal Court by Governor Paul Cellucci in 2001, and his appointment in 2006 by Governor Mitt Romney to the Superior Court, retiring in 2022.  He served a term as the Regional Administrative Justice for Essex County, and on various committees and in various initiatives including the Superior Court ADR Committee.  Governor Deval Patrick appointed him chair of the Sentencing Commission in 2014, where he served one term until 2018. Jack is an experienced teacher having taught at three local law schools and three colleges and universities, and he has been recognized for his teaching skill.

He teaches Business Law at the Woods College of Advancing Studies at Boston College in a course that he has jokingly labeled as "Business Law Black Belt Self-Defense".
